Intersections
You meet folks at times in your life when at first encounter the meaning of the chance, or the fate that brings you together is not clear; sometimes it takes time for the meaning to manifest.
So it has been with Chris Cheek – I thought it was about me augmenting his art project. Capturing and recording the moments of the fine interaction with the violinist Angie Shyr who brought us together.
Little did I know beyond the initial getting along, and the work at hand spending many days recording and assembling what will be their XO Planet album, how things would manifest for me.
That being Chris’ emotive sound and command of all four saxophones. His capability so aiding in capturing the feeling of many of the foundational folktale infusions compositions. Really capturing the emotion, the it of the stuff in my head in aural form to bend ears.
The recordings.. A record in time, the performances are captured as they are, sometimes in the adroit words of the great guitarist, Jim Hall “warts and all.” The flow in the moment, and that flow as it is for me, especially in Chris’ emotive solos on Home, Haze Country and A/ttitude, the bounce on Noho Rag and his fluid chops on The Princess and The Jester…
Who knew…
